You may be aware that some filling stations, including those at supermarkets, are now selling B30 fuel (30 per cent bio-diesel). B30 is a blend of 70 per cent fossil diesel and 30 per cent biodiesel, which is derived from fatty acid methyl esters (FAME).

While it may be very tempting to use a greener fuel, especially as it’s priced at a similar level to conventional diesel, the majority of manufacturers have stated it is not sanctioned for use in their vehicles and would invalidate the vehicle’s warranty.

It is not approved for use by Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Toyota, Volvo and Volkswagen.

Vauxhall has approved it for some Vivaro and Movano LCVs but with conditions including replacement of the fuel filter at 24,000 miles and signing a ‘conditions of use’ document as well as providing VIN numbers of the vehicles intending to use the fuel.

Peugeot will sanction use of the fuel but says that a special dispensation is required to ensure that fuel quality standards are respected. Citroën too, will permit use of the fuel but also applies special restrictions. The main diesel fuel injection equipment suppliers say that they would not sanction the use of more than five per cent bio-diesel until such time as a BSI or ISO standard was agreed.

Potential repairs could lead to thousands of pounds if advice is not followed, so we recommend that drivers and fleet managers pass the information to anyone it may affect.

Police are warning the public to be wary of leaving items on show in their cars particularly heading into the Christmas period.

It’s an unfortunate fact that year round items left on show are a big temptation for thieves, but at Christmas even more people leave expensive gifts on show.

Some of the tips the Police have given:

Always lock all doors, windows, boot and sunroof - even if you’re only dashing away from your car for a moment.
Never leave any valuable items on display, remove as much as possible - anything you can’t remove stow away out of sight.
A recent popular item for thieves are Sat Navs - even if they’re removed its fairly easy to identify their presence where there’s suction marks left on windows, for that reason always wipe the windows clean of these marks.
Some police are giving out cards to display telling people valuables have removed, they’re also available to download (www.avonandsomerset.police.uk )

As more countries worldwide go into recession - some good news for the motorist is oil prices have dropped by almost two thirds from the prices being seen this July. It reached a peak of $147 a barrel, as of 28th November the price was at $53 a barrel.

With the high level of duty we pay in the UK, the price at the pump hasn’t fallen so sharply, but prices are down on average 27.5 Pence per litre for for Petrol, 25.8p for Diesel.

Although this is good news, fuel prices are volatile so it’s always worth looking at vehicles with economic fuel consumption, most manufacturers have significantly improved the MPG in the last few years on most vehicles (if you saw Top Gear the other week, the Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion was getting rediculous MPG!)

So take a look at what car leasing offers we have that might further help save you money.

It’s often difficult to truly decide which is better for you - diesel or petrol cars.

When it comes to leasing - the price can vary between the two quite a bit, to throw an extra dilemma into the equation. If you’ve no preference between the two - then we would imagine it’s all down to price.

Well, for this we’ve made a calculator for you to compare costs. You can specify the current fuel price, the combined MPG of the car(s) you’re looking at, and the annual cost of the lease.
It’ll then give you the figures to help you make your decision.

A useful tool, one we use ourselves!

Right now with petrol being quite a bit cheaper than diesel - the benefits of one over the other are a lot closer than they have been for some time.

Download the calculator (right click to save): petrol-or-diesel

We always feature a great selection of offers, both petrol and diesel - so take a look what we have today.

Well - we’ve been asked quite a few times the last couple of days how the VAT will affect your lease (or potential car lease).

Presently; we’ve not been told by the funders we use how they will react to it - we’re sorry we can’t give more detail. Believe us, we’d like to know ourselves!

As soon as we’ve heard, we’ll post an update.

For a business car lease, the impact will likely be so marginal it’s not really going to be a great consideration unless you’re running a large fleet, but we can appreciate you’d like clarification.

More news to follow!

———– Update ———–

In summary, if you have an existing agreement, the new VAT rate will be automatically applied and your Direct Debits will be lowered accordingly. No new hire documentation will be needed for this.

If you’ve signed documents at 17.5% but not taken delivery, for most cases it’ll be automatically adjusted once the payments start. If new agreements are needed, we’ll get in touch with you.

The longer term impact for leasing rates is less obvious - rates will likely be much the same as before. The finance companies work on the basis they claim back all the VAT (as they’re buying the vehicle on your behalf). So providing manufacturers pass on the VAT reduction - the “net” price a finance company pays for the vehicle is the same.

Please do contact us with any queries!
