Fair wear and tear of your lease vehicle
August 12, 2008 – 10:34 amWe’re often asked what’s considered fair wear and tear at the end of a contract/lease. Most finance companies comply with BVRLA guidelines, that are designed to be fair to both the consumer and the finance company. In our experience, think what you would consider acceptable for a used vehicle should you want to buy one - ie. some stone chipping on the bonnet would be expected, a large dent where someone has sat on it, would not! See below for a rough guide:
Windscreen & Lenses
Acceptable: Small scratches and chips outside of the driver’s line of sight
Unacceptable: Any damage within the driver’s direct line of sight. Any chips, cracks or holes in glass or lenses.
Wheels & Tyres
Acceptable: Minor scuffing. Tyres must meet minimum legal requirements
Unacceptable: Scoring and other damage to wheel surface. Damage to side walls or uneven tread wear.
Door Mirrors
Acceptable: Minor scuffing, providing paint is not broken
Unacceptable: Missing, cracked or damaged door mirrors
Bumpers
Acceptable: Minor scuffing up to 25mm in length
Unacceptable: Dented or cracked areas. Deep scuffs where paint surface has been broken.
Bodywork
Acceptable: Small areas of chipping and light scratches up to 25mm, relative to the vehicle age. Dents up to 10mm providing paint is not broken.
Unacceptable: Stone chips or scratches over 25mm that have exposed the bare metal or primer or have rusted. Any impact damage. Multiple dents on a single panel.
Decals
Acceptable: All decals need to be removed and all glue residue removed.
Unacceptable: Any damage caused by the removal of such badges and advertising.
Upholstery
Acceptable: Should be clean and tidy, with only slight wear and soiling through normal use.
Unacceptable: Burns, tears or permanent staining. Any damage caused by the fitting of equipment such as mobile phones.
Please note this is just a guide. Throughout the course of the contract it’s expected that all servicing will be carried out (we can include that within your monthly payments if you’d like) and the vehicle maintained to a roadworthy standard.
If the vehicle is returned with damage outside of the “fair wear and tear” - you will be invoiced after collection for the damage to be put right. We recommend you have this carried out yourself prior to collection.
