Tests on winter tyres have shown their enhanced performance in cold weather over their summer counterparts.
Tests performed at 12mph showed that on snow, winter tyres halved the stopping distance, on ice- summer tyres stopped at 19 metres whereas winter tyres brought the vehicle to a halt within 12.5 metres.
There are also benefits in wet weather and whenever temperatures dip below 7C, it was 3C when I left for work this morning so we’re heading into the season to start thinking about perhaps having a winter set!
Remember- you’ll be saving wear on your summer tyres anyway, so over the course of a year, the cost is going to be relatively marginal particularly when considering the enhanced safety and grip.
Some of the major leasing companies have schemes in place with tyre suppliers in order to supply winter tyres at discounted rates and store your summer tyres for you- contact their service departments for details!
For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is offering the SLK Roadster with a diesel engine. The 204bhp four-cylinder power unit puts the two-seater at the top of its class in numerous respects.
With a fuel consumption of 56.5mpg on the combined cycle, it is the most economical roadster in its segment. Thanks to its torque of 500Nm it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. Like the other models in the latest SLK family, which launched in June 2011, it combines lively sportiness with high-quality appointments and excellent comfort.
Its four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2,143cc generates an output of 204bhp and 500Nm of torque – as much as a petrol engine with twice the displacement would normally generate. This makes the new SLK 250 CDI the most powerful diesel model in its class, and gives the roadster the potential for extremely sporty performance.
Equipped with the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission (a six-speed manual transmission will follow in the second quarter of next year), the diesel SLK sprints from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds and achieves a top speed of 150 mph.
Apart from this, the SLK 250 CDI is the most economical and therefore environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It returns 56.5 mpg and emits CO2 emissions of just 132 g/km. The new SLK 250 CDI will go on sale in the UK early in 2012, pricing is still to be confirmed.

The switchover date for DAB radio to replace Analogue is (and has been for some time) set for 2015. Lot’s of industry analysts are calling this date totally unachievable and unlikely. Many new radios sold to consumers in the home are now DAB enabled (not likely you’d choose otherwise!). But it’s a different story in the motor trade, where manufacturers are in no hurry to start manufacturing their cars with DAB as standard. Without the car manufacturers getting behind it, it only cements the likelihood that the switchover date will get delayed. Add to that concerns of poor quality, and poor coverage in a reported 20% of the country- and the case for DAB isn’t so great at the moment.
That said, if you’re in an area with good coverage, there are stations that are otherwise unavailable to analogue listeners. So what do you do? Most car manufacturers do offer DAB as an option- it’s the nicest solution but some manufacturers are charging a heavy premium for the luxury.
Sony have announced a DAB+ headunit to retro fit to cars (a review from RegHardware here)- most new cars can’t easily have these types of head units fitted anymore as standard stereos are far more advanced than they used to be, but it’s an option to those who can fit it to their cars.
Also available from Pure, is a great dashboard mounted solution. It works in the same way as the MP3 radio transmitters that have been on the market for years by receiving and decoding the DAB radio stations, and re-transmitting them to analogue FM that you can tune your car radio into. Alternatively, you can plug it into an auxiliary socket if you have one available.
Time will tell if all the lease cars we supply will have DAB, it’s inevitable they will eventually if Government insists that analogue FM is switched off- as to when that is is anybody’s guess?

It’s been over 10 years since the new style Driving Licences were introduced- and many people’s licences are due for renewal. Providing your address is up to date, you will receive a reminder from the DVLA before it expires with instructions on how to renew it.
Renewing is easy if you have had a passport issued within the last 5 years- you can do so online at DirectGov.
If you haven’t had a passport within 5 years, then you can either do it by post or at the Post Office. You’ll also need a new photograph taken!
Don’t forget most Leasing companies will require sight of a copy of your Driving Licence before you can lease your new car. It’s important to keep the details up to date, DVLA can issue fines of £1000 if you don’t!
